Extension of the department of radiotherapy

Building activities of the extension of the department of Radiotherapy, 1986-1988. On the picture, the shell of the building of the ground floor is completed. Building begins on the first floor with the new offices for physicians and secretariat. Left above, the building of the megavolt radiation shelters Nrs. 8 and 9 has been started.

In 2000, this part of the building has been integrated into the large new building and renovation of the Netherlands Cancer Institute (NKI). Shelter nr 8 has been broken down and is now part of a corridor to a second group of 5 megavolt rooms in the B-corridor. The current main entrance of the NKI is where the crane is positioned.

The current central hall of the NKI is where the road is on the right above and where the stored material is placed along the façade. 

The new building and renovation for the extension of the premises in 1986-1988 has a long preceding history. Professor Klaas Breur anticipated at the end of the 1970's that the steady increase in the number of treated patients would lead to waiting lists and overburdening of the department. He developed the first plans for the extension which was realised in 1988. The megavolt building is extended from 4 to 6 shelters. A third simulator is installed. The number of examination rooms is increased and the workspace of staff and other personnel is extended. The costs of building and for medical and other inventories runs to a total amount of NLG 11,600,000.  In the muddy soil of Amsterdam, buildings are founded on piles that are driven deep into the soil to rest on solid sandbanks present at up to 20 meters deep.  The first pile for the new building of the department of radiotherapy is driven by the widow of Professor Breur, Mrs. Keek Breur.

The extension of the department of radiotherapy was completed in 1987. After fitting up and the connection to the older part, the department is ready in its new form in 1988. Due to the installation of a new accelerator in 1987, the renovation of the department can take place without any loss of treatment capacity.  In spite of a national shortage of trained radiation therapists, the department succeeds in using its increased capacity to the full.

Six linear accelerators are installed in the megavolt shelters, at the top of the sketch. These are (from left to right) shelter 4, Cobalt machine of 1973; shelter 5, 10 MeV accelerator of 1968; shelter 6, 20 MeV accelerator of 1973; shelter 7, 14 MeV accelerator of 1983; during the renovation: shelter 8, 4 MV accelerator (1987) and shelter 9, 20 MeV accelerator (1988) are added.

The 4 MV accelerator is manufactured by Brown Boveri,the other machines by Philips. In the smaller radiation rooms seen at the bottom of the sketch, the older X-ray machines of Philips: an orthovolt machine of 250 kV, Superficial therapy machine of 100 kV and a contact therapy machine of 50 kV.

At that time Waiting Room 2 was at the back of the Radiotherapy Department, where now the front desk and main entrance are situated.  Across from unit  9 (now A2), there was reception desk (2) for this waiting room. Patients were received here for examination and check up by the physicians' assistants.
