Den Hoed working with the standard dosimeter.
This is the first standard dosimeter in the Netherlands which was based on the new ICRU dose unit "r" ("röntgen"). Left of the instrument is an incubator containing Drosophila (banana or fruitfly) eggs, which he used for radiobiological experiments.
Den Hoed studies the biological effect of different sorts and qualities of radiation on living tissues. Through his contribution in providing better insight into the biological effect of radiation, the dosage of radiation given to patients becomes more effective.
An organism much used for this is the banana (or fruit) fly, Drosophila melanogaster. The flies are supplied by the Laboratory for Histology and Embryology in Utrecht . Den Hoed uses the eggs from the fruit fly to study the radiobiological effect of different qualities of X-rays.
